Train. Bangkok - Suratthani

All trains departure from Bangkok (central train station Hualalumpong). Then a bus takes you to one of the ferry piers to Koh Samui. We recommend you taking a sleeping car in a night train. The price stated above (598 baht, May 2011) is an optimum solution - 2 class with fan, lower bed, "express" kind of train. ("rapid" is cheaper but it makes more stops).

You can buy a complex ticket "train + bus + ferry" in most of the agencies in Bangkok. Keep in mind that if your train doesn't make it to Surratthani until 7 am you will have go on your own from the train station.

You can take a taxi to Donsak pier or take a bus to the bus station in Suratthani and take a songthaew to the pier.

That usually takes quite a long time as the buses and songthaew make many stops during your way to the pier.

1 Class

Modern car with air conditioning. 2 beds compartment, sink. Clean bed, soap and towels. There is a shower at the end of the car. You can adjust the bed for sitting and lying positions.

There are 12 upper and 12 lower beds in the car

2 Class

Most travelers are satisfied with 2 Class. It is comfortable and safe. Beds are placed not in separate compartments but along the walls of the car. During the days seats are positioned towards each other, at night times they are folded into beds. There are curtains available for additional privacy.

2 class can be wit or without air con.

Upper bed is usually cheaper than the lower one but it is more narrow. There is a lot of space for the luggage. You can even lock it if you want to.

20 upper and 20 lower seats/beds in the car.

Old type of carriage (no aircon)

16 upper 16 lower beds)

DRC

A modern kind of train equipped with comfortable adjustable seats and air conditioning. 2 class. Food and drinks are served.

2 Class, sitting

Nice and cheap way of traveling long distances during the day. Though a little slower than express. Air condiotioning is optional.

3 class, siting

Not bad for short distance traveling but is not recommended if you want to get to Suratthani
