Dentistry on Koh Samui

If it is rather clear and simple with the hospitals in Samui, and if you have insurance there are not many options to choose from – just go where the insurance company says, so in case of dental problems when not every type of travel insurance covers the treatment, you will have to choose a clinic all by yourself.

There are many dental clinics on Samui. Let's try to figure out where and with what problems should we go.

I must say that the ideal option, which could be recommended to everyone, saying: “ They have good prices, excellent quality, and there are experts in all areas” - does not exist for Koh Samui. Or we have not found it yet, but have been looking hard enough for 4 years.
More or less acceptable clinics will be listed at end of the article and now I am going to tell you about Thai dentistry as a whole, taking into account the specifics of the island.

To have a general idea of the level of prices for dental care in Thailand, as well as the services provided here, take a look at the examples of several randomly selected websites of dental clinics in Bangkok: http://www.thantakit.com/index.htm, http://www. dentalwhiteclinic.com (prices are not shown, and it is a standard thing for websites in Thailand) and http://www.silomdental.com/index.html

Now a few words about dental offices in Koh Samui
1. "State" dentistry on Samui is available only in the municipal hospital in Nathon. However, for foreigners its services will still be for a charge, and the price is only slightly lower than in most of the private offices. The only thing that is made only in Nathon – dental crowns. And all private clinics would bring their casts here.

2. All the equipment in Samui private dental clinics is at a fairly high level:
- Very comfortable chairs that can be unfold to almost 180 degrees.
- Every private hospital, which usually has 1-2 doctors is equipped with modern X-ray and equipment for teeth cleaning and whitening.
- Many clinics can show the patient sitting in a chair everything that is happening in the mouth on the monitor.

3. Clinic staff is very friendly. The doctor is assisted, as a rule, by more than one nurse (usually 2-3), and thanks to their constant attention you only need to open your mouth and try not to forget that you are in a doctor's office. Usually a person is covered with a sheet with a cut for the mouth. Under this sheet one can easily fall asleep, that is how gently and painlessly they do their work.
3.1. Air conditioners, as well as everywhere in Thailand, are working at full capacity. So either get dressed warmly, or ask them to cover you (usually they have special blankets or large towels), otherwise there is a risk of freezing.

Usual fillings are made efficiently, and fairly cheap. Price lists are in the photo gallery for this article.

6. Root canal treatment. That shall be more difficult. Especially in case of inflammation.
Moreover, experts in Samui, and there are not so many of them, would be able to perform only the initial filling. In difficult cases – they prefer not to do so and send customers  to the Bangkok Samui Hospital (Google-coordinate - 9.514059,100.050171), where about once a month a specialist comes from Bangkok (Endodantist).

In general, each hospital has its own dental office, but do not think that there is going to be something fundamentally different from the ordinary, private dental clinics. There will be the same doctors, and about the same prices. The cost of root canal treatment will be from 4 -5 thousand (for a front tooth) to 10-12 thousand baht (for molars).

7. Crown, as I mentioned before, are all made in the municipal hospital in Nathon, but in this case all depends on the correct measurements and subsequent installation of the crown. It is therefore important to choose a good doctor. Better - the recommended one. The average cost of a ceramic (cermet) crown - 12-15 thousand baht.

8. More sophisticated things like dental implants, veneers, braces, etc., on Koh Samui can be done only by a few specialists. Some of them are constantly working in Bangkok and come only for a few days a week, or even once a month to Koh Samui. The prices on the island are comparable to those throughout Thailand.
And if on Koh Samui the installation of the Astra tech implant is gonna cost 75,000, then in Surat Thani, and Bangkok, it will be about the same price, plus or minus 5,000 baht. Cheaper will only be the installation of a lower-quality implant.

9. Each private dental clinic has a photo of the doctor and his diploma or information about the diploma / license. Often you can see photos of the exact date when the diploma had been given to the doctor.
However, this is true for all doctors in Thailand – one needs to be sure that he is not dealing with an impostor.

10. Some travel insurance include the coverage of cases of acute pain. Usual limit - 150-250 USD By such insurance you can restore a breakaway filling, a breakaway piece of tooth and cure acute attack of tooth decay.
nuances:

- All operations are carried out only within the limit of the insurance (ie, make a crown / implant or fill up / fix previously filled canals will be impossible).
- The insurance company will send you only to the dental office of the hospital, which the Assistance company of your insurance company works with, there is no other choice.
- The bill for the services will be the highest possible for the whole coverage limit. Note, however, that:

similar service provided at your own expence (without insurance documents ) in the same or any other dental office on the island will be 2-3 times cheaper;

USD Rates of your insurance company may differ from the same rates of the hospital, and the bill will be given in Thai Bahts. The difference will be extorted from the patient.

Finding of "your own" dentist on Samui and throughout Thailand, is just about the same as in any other country in the world.
If you used to trust advertising, choose those who widely advertise their services.
If you prefer to choose a doctor from personal experience, here you can address to any of the local doctors with some smaller problems - see how they are going to treat you and to whom you would trust, and only then contact them with something serious.
If you need an expert advice - ask your insurance agent or a local doctor, whom you already know and trust.

The situation with dentists in Samui can vary, although not as fast as, for example, in case with cafes and restaurants.
And if 4 years ago, we were recommended a clinic Baan Luck Fun and its owner - Dr. Lek (especially the office in Bophut), and Jai Dee hospital in Nathon, in the last 2-3 years they are only criticized.
Although doctors there are all the same. Just people getting too lazy or there is some other clinics, offering better service than what they used to offer.

Currently (spring 2014), the most frequently recommended are the following clinics:

Family Dental Care. Maenam, Soi 5. Located opposite the KAI cafe, right at the ring road. Google-coordinate - 9.569551,99.995429.

"Dental Design Clinic" is in Maenam beach area, right on the ring road, opposite a huge store for small businesses "75". Google-coordinate - 9.565126,100.012864

"Dental Home" - is located between Makro and Big-C, but on the opposite side of the ring road. Here you will find doctors from Bangkok, reception by appointment. Deal with implants, braces and other "difficult" dental problems. Also do average whitening and fillings.
http://www.samuidentalclinic.com/ Google's coordinate - 9.5413,100.040134.(+66) 086-712-9898.

Among customers there are many foreigners (European pensioners) and wealthy Thais. We are also their patients and very satisfied ones.

"Dental Clinic" - an office opposite Tesco, Chaweng and "Banana-IT". Google-coordinate - 9.535332,100.041829 One of the few clinics on the island that can make implants. Can offer Korean implants for 65 000 baht.

"Dental Care" - almost opposite Tesco, Lamai. They were recommended by my Thai insurance agent. Got no complaints for a crown and a filling. Prices are average or slightly above average. Lots of clients, so its better to make an appointment in advance. Google-coordinate - 9.4722,100.046649. Tel 077 961 985.

Especially for those who have read good reviews about Jai Dee in Nathon,  they are at the T-junction, where the one way street ends. Google-coordinate - 9.53015,99.936035

Baan Luck Fun - almost opposite the kart road, and not far from the arch - the second entry in the "Fisherman village". Google-coordinate - 9.559421,100.02537

A certain indicator of the quality of the clinic - customers.
If there are no people waiting in line, and you are offered to choose any time to make an appointment, or if a clinics is willing to take you "right now" – there is a reason to be suspicious.

And at the end of the article - a few words about how to take care of your teeth in Thailand.
Thai cuisine is very fond of using sugar, and there is sugar in many local fruits. There is also acid found in fruits (pineapples) which has a very bad effect on tooth enamel.
Therefore teeth in Thailand need to be taken care of more carefully.
During the few years we have been here, we have tried several versions of local toothpastes. In the end still could not find anything that would be more optimal in terms of price / quality than Colgate. Global brand and global quality standards speak for themselves.

Of tooth powders, the most durable protection and removal of the plaque and odor gives the option here:

This powder we liked a bit less, but it is still quite good:

Legendary Thai herbal toothpaste with a whitening effect ( is there anything in Thailand does not have whitening effect :)) Smell and taste are very similar to the tooth powder in a green bank.
Made by www.poompuksa15.com, - http://js-thailand.com/index.php.
You can buy it at the Walking Street, in "natural products for tourists" kind of stores and Morya Pharmacy pharmacies. At the Walking Street it costs 70 baht.
Foams very well. Tourist legend has it that one pack can last for a year of use.
